Mind you I was sitting over a coffee in the cafe opposite to do this drawing so I can't really complain about tea rooms.
Sketching this week on the Mendips first at Crooks Peak then at Cheddar using my Pitt artist felt pens These use permanent pigment so colour will not fade like ordinary felt pens. I've used a double page of my sketchbook to get the width. I'm on the West Mendip Way walk, sitting on Wavering Down looking towards Crooks Peak and Bridgewater Bay with, in the far distance, the Quantocks on the left and Wales on the right. Closer on the right is Loxton Hill and a tiny bit of the far end of Weston-Super-Mare. The blue squiggles could be birds but are in fact accidents where the wind whipped the paper onto my pen, a hazard of windy sketching. This is Lion Rock with Rose Cottage, The Cliffs, Cheddar in front. The Grade 2 listed Rose cottage and former shop has just been sold by auction for complete renovation so I wanted to get a sketch of its delapidated glory before it is transformed into a tea room like everywhere else.

Priddy Pool on the Mendips is a lovely place to paint and enjoy natural history at the same time. Lots of fish disturbing the water and moving the reeds and I heard a cuckoo for the first time in years. The lone pine reflected in the water. It was a sunny day without too much wind. The weather was changing so for once no cloudless blue sky but some cloud effects. I was having a look at skies in the 'Inventing Impressionism' exhibition at the National Gallery the day before to see what they were doing with clouds. But like me, painting on sunny days seemed to lead to blue skies with the odd wisp or Simpson cloud (cumulous). A few artists had more complex clouds: Boudin, Daubigny, some Pissarro's and early Monet. My favourite spot to paint is Cheddar Gorge and when it was hot I went for 4 days during the sunny April weather. I bought a Cheddar Gorge Climbs book to try and work out exactly what I have been painting. This is the view up the gorge from Landslip Quarry. On the right is the base of High Rock (which towers out of the painting) I was trying out my new Cobra Oils (by Royal Talens) which I bought on my recent Paris trip. The second Painting is of Heart leaf Bluff (on the left) from the car park opposite. I haven't worked out what the right hand rock is called yet but it is on the south side of the road. Spring means time to get painting outside and blossom trees are a great subject, but easier when you can duck indoors when April showers fall
