Priddy Pool on the Mendips is a lovely place to paint and enjoy natural history at the same time. Lots of fish disturbing the water and moving the reeds and I heard a cuckoo for the first time in years. The lone pine reflected in the water. It was a sunny day without too much wind. The weather was changing so for once no cloudless blue sky but some cloud effects.
I was having a look at skies in the 'Inventing Impressionism' exhibition at the National Gallery the day before to see what they were doing with clouds. But like me, painting on sunny days seemed to lead to blue skies with the odd wisp or Simpson cloud (cumulous). A few artists had more complex clouds: Boudin, Daubigny, some Pissarro's and early Monet.
