PictureSheltering under a tree to start my watercolour sketch at Yeo Valley Organic Garden, July 11th 2015.
Experimenting with watercolour,  larger paper and larger brushes at  the Yeo Valley Organic Garden, Holt Farm, Blagdon, Somerset.
This is my first use of paper cut from a huge roll of Fabriano Watercolour paper I bought to enable myself to try larger formats.
The roll is 1.5m x 10m but my first effort is a modest 47x 60 cm.
Watercolour artist Paul Weaver loaned me one of his Freestyle 'one brush does all' brushes (available from Rosemary & Co) for the day.
As I didn't finish I came back the next week to do more . This lovely garden is open two days a week for summer and also has a great cafe and loads of painting subjects so I decided to buy a season ticket.

My next two outings were to paint Blagdon Lake from the rough grass meadow at Holt Farm. This 20 x 20 cm board is a more typical size for my location oil paintings.
Lots of butterflies, azure damselflies and squeeks and divings in the grass, presumably from shrews. Canada geese in the field and the afternoon procession of cows passing back and forth to the milking parlour. (This is the home of Yeo Valley Yogurt)

PictureBaby guinea pigs who don't stay still, at Holt Farm 31st July. Watercolour pencil
Louder squeaking could be heard on the lawn where four baby guinea pigs were racing around in a huge ark and popping in and out of sight. Constant movement makes animals difficult to draw but I gave it a go. You can only do a fraction of each at a time. You hope they will return to the same pose every now and then, so you can end up with a whole animal. The crazy hairdos of abyssinian guinea pigs also doesn't help.
