Cheddar GORGE in the mist

Although I have painted in Cheddar Gorge before ( 8 of them on show at Caffee Clifton at the moment), this was my first chance to paint from the Cheddar Village side. I had 5 working days on my artist retreat and did 4 oils, 4 tiny sketches, 3 slightly bigger sketches and a card for mothers day. Gorge View Cottage on Birch Hill is elevated so has a  great view of cottages and cliffs from the windows  and you can stay warm inside while you paint.

Cheddar Gorge from Gorge View Cottage. C Lamb. ink. Mar 20th 2017. I started with this very small sketch (3 1/2" x 5 1/8") to get to know the view. I found the variety and angles of cottage roofs as interesting as the cliffs.

The Gorge from Cheddar Village. C Lamb. 20th-24th Mar 17. Oil on board. 7" x 9 1/2". I started this oil as a preliminary study for a larger version but ended up working on bits of this every day instead.

Forecast on the 21st was for rain by 3pm but I braved the variable overcast weather to walk to the top above the Gorge ( north side), in the hope I could do an oil. Did this quick ink sketch first to try and understand the rock structures.

Cheddar Gorge from Above. C Lamb. Oil on Board. 21st March 17. With the small set of paints I took with me I managed 4 hours before I had to retreat after it hailed twice and a gust of wind blew my plastic carrying case over the edge. Luckily the painting landed in the grass beside me.
