All four of my submissions have been selected for the 111 th Open Exhibition of Clifton Arts. Runs from 31st July to 15th August at the Undercroft, Victoria Methodist Church, Whiteladies Road, Bristol. Here framed are Shepherds Hut, Wrington, 2020, and Upper Tullochgrue Farm, Rothiemurchas, 2019. I usually like to leave my oils at least a year before framing and exhibiting so they have properly dried.

Also selected are Woodside Cottage, New Forest, 2019 and Sheep pen, Brockley Elm farm, 2020.

Towards Nash Point -The Glamorgan Heritage coastline. C.Lamb. Oil .5 May 21. 8x8". Welsh artist Huw Richards Evans gave us an interesting demo on Zoom of his technique painting on a black priming to start. This weeks challenge was to paint a Pembrokeshire seascape on a black priming. www.huwrichardsevans.com
I haven't been to Pembrokeshire for many years, but I used to visit a friend at Southerndown so I  used an old sketch of the wonderful cliffs of the Glamorgan Heritage Coastline for my inspiration.

Picture
Autumn Clour, Sneed Lodge, Old Sneed Park. C. Lamb. 24 Oct 2020. Watercolour. 8x8". Making a list of all the challenges to decide which to enter into the exhibition I discovered I have missed out no 32 so subsequent challenges are wrongly numbered. That one was to enter a work into the Club card competition. I am painting the thatched cottage from the car on the opposite side of the road to the Postbox oil.

Cheddar Gorge. Oil. 16th April 2021. 16" X 12"- Larger than normal. The first chance to go to my favourite place to paint was once stay at home restrictions were lifted on 12th April. It was going to be my limited palette vegetation painting but I couldn't get the lids off some of the requested colour tubes. Plus not much vegetation Although the sun shone it was a nippy wind so I did this from the car.

Garden Clouds. C. Lamb. 6th April 2021. Oil paint. After the Art club demo/ paint-along the previous week we were given the subject of Clouds for Challenge 54. Weather had gone too cold to sit out so did this through the window. I use Artisan Oil normally as it is water miscible so uses water to clean up not solvent, but for these I was using tradition Artist Oils so I used Seymour Coco-Bello paint diluent which is low odour.
Picture
Clouds. C.Lamb. Oil. 27th March 2021. This is my painting from a demo on Clouds by Bristol Landscape artist Tom Hughes. So great to have an artist who pays attention to clouds. See more of his excellent work on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/tomhughespaintings/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/hughespaintings Instagram - www.instagram.com/tomhughespainting
Picture
Battery Point and the Severn from Portishead . C. Lamb . Watercolour. 31st March 2021. Trying to use white wax crayon to draw pale clouds rather than masking fluid but hard to see what you did so they are a bit schematic and often in the wrong place. Still it was an enjoyable sunny day and warm in the shelter of a hedge.

Picture
View from Langamull beach, Isle of Mull, Inner Hebrides. C. Lamb. Acrylic 2009. Painted this sketch on holiday on Mull in 2009 using a set of Winsor and Newton Finity acrylics. These use different pigments than my normal choice so the colours are brighter, or perhaps it was the marvelous light.
Picture
Student digs , 71 Cumberland Street, Edinburgh. C. Lamb. Watercolour. I didn't do any new work for these two challenges but dug out some old work that fitted the subject.
The Scottish Colourists are well known to us Scots but possibly less so in England. They were a group of Scottish painters active in the early 20th C who spent some time studying in France  and were influenced by bold use of colour and free brushwork.  They are Samuel John Peploe, Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell, George Leslie Hunter and John Duncan Fergusson. National Galleries of Scotland had a recent series of exhibitions of their works in 2012-13-14 which I was able to visit.  Samuel Peploe's son Denis was a tutor at Edinburgh College of Art, but his only advice to me was to not paint with black lines.

Horseguards flags, September 14th 2014. C.Lamb. Watercolour. For my historic image I reused this watercolour I did the week of the Scottish Independance referendom (Sept 18th 2014). I realised it might be the last time I might see the Scottish Saltire (St Andrews cross) and Union Jack flying together over Horseguards. But they voted to remain by 55% (45% to leave).
